A room built the Siwan way, from salt block and mud, with palm beams overhead and walls almost a metre thick, so it stays cool without air conditioning. Window onto the Shali ruins, which turn orange about twenty minutes before sunset. Breakfast of olives, dates, bread and eggs on the terrace. No television and patchy signal, which is rather the point.
